This Simpsons episode actually came out long before CatDog. It makes me wonder if they borrowed the concept...
I tried to watch an episode of Catdog, and I couldn't stand either end. They were both very annoying and unlikable to me. Then again, I tended to like more placid protagonists at the time, while the brash ones have grown on me significantly. If I were to watch FMA with my old mindset, I'm sure I would have found Ed insufferably annoying. XD
XD! Better yet, sell that combo to a fertilizer plant.

Well, if you're taking that route with the two rear ends, dont' sell it, just rent it, or sell the material - who needs a job when you've got resources to sell. (I suppose it would become a job in itself.) I always found catdog to be humorous, not necessarily abrasive, but the Cat end was somewhat rude at times, and the dog end was... extremely energetic, to say the least. I suppose for me, the appeal was in the situation they were in, not necessarily the characters, since now that I think about it, they aren't exactly very comprehensive with the characters, featuring less than twenty or so, total.

For me, if I don't like the characters, I can't get into the story at all. And if I actually dislike the characters, it makes me dislike the story. Yeah, I'm a dork that way. I even won't play WoW characters I make if they don't seem to have any personality. For some reason that happened to all my Tauren. :/
I can see the classified add now: "Cat and dog hind ends for rent by the hour. Call for details."

I am kind of the same way, I don't really like to continue reading/watching/playing a story if I can't identify with the characters, and their goal.
It's kind of why the only anime I've ever really watched are Love Hina and FullMetal Alchemist. Ooh, there's also speedgrapher, I need to watch a few more episodes of that. Well, and I do like every Miyazaki film I see, and I did watch Akira too, but those were less "whole series commitments" and more of just feature-length films, that other people in the room were already watching anyway.
Unfortunately, I even find it difficult to write my novels if I either don't like the characters, or can't really identify with them. It's one of the reasons that instead of just making characters on the spot, I try to predefine everybody I want to use, and if I need an incidental, I'll document them and see what they turn out to be like.

For me, I can kinda-sorta cope with characters I don't like, so long as I take them in small doses, and sometimes they grow on me. But when they have no personality whatsoever, everything is just so DEAD. Luckily, for 25CH, we've got personality out the wazoo. XD
I haven't watched Love Hina, though I've read some of the manga. I love the Ruruken manga too, though the early episodes of the anime suck (I haven't watched much of the later Kyoto arc though, and it's supposed to be way better). As for FMA, you have to read the manga. After you read the manga, the anime versions of the characters will all seem...well...emo. XD Miyazaki is a mad genius. Oh, and I've gotten fond of subbed Sailor Moon. It's hilarious! But the characters are completely different in the dub, and it makes me aaangryyy....
Most of my protagonists were created before their plots. Actually, all of them were, come to think of it. :/ They develop, and then the world develops around them.
It's hard to make incidental characters when you know you're going to kill them off in 3 pages. XD That was a big problem towards the end of NaNo for me. ^^;
