My mom's got XP on her compy, and it's slow as hell. Takes a good 5 to 7 minutes to boot up fully, for one thing, and for another you can't have iTunes and Internet Explorer open simultaneously. Thing is, she uses Photoshop a lot, her printer is a memory eater, AND she loves WoW, so she's doubly unhappy with her compy. She's drooling over my Mac now, which can run WoW full res, iTunes, and Safari all at the same time with no ill effects whatsoever. =P
Just before I got the Mac, though, I had a Frankencompy too. It was 8 years old when I finally got rid of it last August. I tripled the memory (and maxed out of slots at a paltry 512 meg), replaced the hard drive with one twice the capacity after the first died, and replaced the ethernet card. In addition, though, some of the original hardware was weird--whoever decided that a soundcard and a modem belonged on the same piece of hardware was sick in the head, I swear. The Frankencompy was sad in that with nothing else open I could only use 300 dpi in Photoshop, and even then it took five minutes to save every time. Boooo.

I'm envying Paul's Mac, but for the time being, this will have to do. It still beats writing everything by hand.

Yeah, no kidding. I made do with my Frankencompy for four years of high school, so it's not impossible. Still, I loooove my Mac. I'd been campaigning for one for five years, and only was able to get it because my university's network wouldn't have allowed the Frankencompy on.

Maybe I should try that. "Mom, my DSL won't let my computer connect anymore. I need a Mac." Nope. Can't see her buying that. She tried to bribe me, though. She told me she'd buy me an audio compressor if I liked my job. Too bad that's not likely in the near future.

Yeah, my argument went sort of like this: "Mom, the university won't let anything that's not XP or OS X onto the network for security reasons, and there's no WAY the Frankencompy will run XP. I need a new computer. Can it please, PLEASE be a Mac?" I'm still amazed it worked, personally. Bribery, eh? I talked my mom into bribing me for something. XD I started writing a novel last November, but got stalled at the 58K words halfway point. So, in order to motivate myself, I asked her to make a deal with me: When I finish the first draft, I get a Wii. Or rather, WE get a Wii. Sad thing is, I've only written 500 words in it since the 30th of November. I'll have to work on that and my comic over the summer. Which is just as well; I'll need their two contrasting tones to make me feel balanced.

I don't think it's going to work. I want to like doing my job, rather than pretending to like it to get a piece of studio equipment. That's a good deal with the Wii, though. I think you might have mentioned it elsewhere, so I'm assuming she's okay with the deal? I'll have to help motivate you.

Okay with it? She wants that Wii! She knows that school has to come first, but over the summer may become a different story...
But I understand about wanting to like your job, really. I want to like my classes, though as of right now I'm stuck in pre-reqs with overly critical teachers.

Sorry I'm late, but hi Pipe Organ Wolf! You direct music at your church? Cool! Do you work with the instrumental, choral or both? On a random point of interest, our church actually just got a Schantz pipe organ. It's really pretty. ^^;
And it has a zimbelstern that makes a wooden star go "spinnnnn....." XD Anyway, hi!

Oooo. Zimbelsterns are cool. Very cool! A friend and I are in the process of trying to engineer a "snoring" sound effect machine for a theatre organ. It's proven to be quite a challenge, though. We were talking with an honest-to-god organ builder about it, and he laughed at us. Schantz, eh? They're in the neighboring state from me. I'd love to tour their factory. I've heard some good stuff about their instruments. As for my job, I'm the boss of the whole ministry. I do all the planning and directing, I rehearse the various groups, choral and instrumental, and I play at most of the Masses.

Me? I've had those little strawberry frosted mini-wheats for breakfast and now I'm eating pita chips, hummus and carrots. ...I want beef. Or elk. Or possibly sardines, but not that brand that made me sick! A snoring sound effect? Never have seen one; what's it for?

Hm...How odd that you are so hyper. Sounds like you got more sleep than me, at any rate. XD

Mmmm. Pita chips and hummus. Food fit for God. I used to go out for pita and hummus with my BF all the time. That's actually what we were eating when we were telling the organ builder about the snoring machine. ;D

That's what makes that "Six degrees of separation" thingee so much fun.
