Venomeye made an almost saddening confession in his introduction thread, stating that he doesn't know much music. And then I thought, "Who, in this vast sea of mass media, really does?"
So, in response to that thought, I'm creating this thread. Here be the place to reccomend, discuss, and generally ramble about music. I'd like to make a quick reminder of the "No flaming!" rule; remember, each recommendation is opinion.

Okay, I'm starting this thing off. Band reccomendations!
Band Name: Leahy Genre: ...Not sure. Some folk influence, plus some classical. Leahy is a band of brothers and sisters from Canada. They all play multiple instruments, though Erin Leahy is the queen of the piano and Donell Leahy must be one of the most amazing fiddlists on the freakin' planet. They do both slow and fast songs, mostly instrumental, but occasionally Erin and the other girls will sing. I could listen to them all day. And if you like listening to them, then you've got to find the oppurtunity to see them live. I swear, they're good on recording, but are ten times better live! They clearly love being on stage.
Band: Janne da Arc Genre: J-Rock is the best fit. While strongly rock, Janne da Arc is actually surprisingly versitile. They do not only hard rock, but slower stuff, classically influenced, and jazz influenced works as well. And the vocalist is pretty good, IMHO.
Band: Delerium Genre: iTunes calls it Electronica/Dance...Though I'm not sure that covers it all. Delerium is a group that specializes in arrangements, often employing multiple vocalists in a single album. They're mellow, but not to the put-you-to-sleep extent. They do clearly have electronica and techno influences, but don't repeat as often as some electronica or techno bands out there.
Hm...I'll scrounge up more later, but I think this is enough to get things going.

Wow havn't heard of those. Nevermind. I will make it my best effort to listen to samples of every band mentioned in this entire topic. I listen to... melodic epic death metal with classical elements.
Band name: Becoming the Archetype Genre: Progressive/Death metal These guys used to have four guitarists, but are now down to two. They put as much work as they do in the music as they do in the lyrics, and to me it feels epic. While mostly death metal/cookie monster growls, they do soft instrumentals and classical interludes within songs at the same time. Good examples of these are "Night's sorrow", "Elegy", and "Into Oblivion". Their second album differs from their first with the inclusion of clean vocals and more of a technical sound.
Whoops out of bands.

Band Name: Jethro Tull Genre: "Progressive Rock" My MP3 player calles it progressive rock, but I don't think that's accurate. They're a 70's British rock band, and they've done a lot of experimental stuff. The lead vocalist is also a flutist (like me!!!), and they've done some very interesting crossover stuff. For example, a Bouree by J. S. Bach, a Madrigal by Henry VIII, and Ian Anderson's wonderful Christmas Song. There's a lot of message to the music, especially in recordings like "Thick as a Brick" and "Aqualung." I don't have a fave, though. I can't pick. But I still haven't really forgiven my bf for introducing me to the guilty pleasures of "Passion Play." Check out "The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles" youtube.com/watch?v=3RinnG_BZRU*possessed grin*

You play flute too? So do I! (Though I haven't played it in months. *guilt trip*) That was one weird music video. O.o It was like some children's fable gone awry. And, although I gave this link to Pipe-Organ on DA, I really felt I should share this with you guys: www.jonathancoulton.com/mp3/Re%20Your%20Brains.mp3This song cannot be improved by zombies, because it already HAS zombies!

Yeah, you're not the only one on a guilt trip. I used to put in a few hours every day, but with the new job, I have't played since January 28. And my parents just bought me a brand-new HAYNES!!! (like a $4,000 instrument)) for Christmas!!! My chiropractor wants me to get back to that, because although my problems may be flute-related, the fact that they didn't affect me when I actively played was significant.
Isn't that Tull video great? I think its hilarious. And I LOVE that "Your Brains" song! It's totally going on the MP3 player!!

Yeah, about this time last year my parents bought me a Gemeinhardt KGM Limited--a beautiful $1,200 solid silver instrument. Which, I think, is contributing to the guilt trip. ^^;
I love it too. XD Zombies rock.

My first two flutes were Gemeindhardts. Flute # 1 Augustine was a 2SP. Flute # 2 Caesar was a 3SB. I still keep them both in playing condition. Just realized my link doesn't play the whole song. I'm trying to fix that.

Okay, you just added another eerie similarity to the list. O.o While my beginner flute didn't have a name (it had identity issues, I guess, and no wonder--the company that made it actually specialized in clarinets), my current one is named HakuRyu.
XD! That song is hilarious. Or at least, the part the link allows. I like that it's all a-capella (or however the heck you spell that).

That eat-your-brains song is funny, so is the Easter Island one, especially with all of that rambling going on in the back. The song does seem to end abruptly, but I'm guessing it's only because it's a sample.

I'm having a heck of a time finding the full version online. Yes, it is all a capella. I played it for some friends tonight, and they just about wet themselves laughing. My BF and I used to just start randomly singing it all the time. Now, my obsession with Easter Island heads is somewhat understandable.

Start randomly singing it? Now that's funny! That reminds me of my friends who would randomly yell at the top of their lungs "Bob Saget!" during school passing period. Everyone stopped and stared every time.
The song, kinda reminds me of Weird Al though, his music was always about something comical and funny. I enjoyed his work, especially his song about horoscopes. I haven't listened to that stuff for ages though.
I think I'm going to check out some of those bands mentioned earlier now.

"Bob Saget!?!?!" I love it!! I think that's what I miss most about my friend being gone. There's no sense in saying something totally random unless you have an audience in on the joke.
Back in high school, I totally crushed over this guy who had no interest in me whatsoever. Right about that time, White Town* released "Your Woman" (still one of my all-time faves). My friend and I used to follow him around the whole school humming that.
*If you're not familiar with them, that's another one I'd highly recommend checking out!

Poofie, what does "HakuRyu" mean? I'm always curious. My Haynes is yet to be named. It's a "she", I'm certain of that, but I haven't had the time to get to know her as well as I'd like. The model is "Amadeus", so my BF wanted to name her "Constanza," but I just wasn't sure.
